If you are looking for a different Japanese condiment, this one is perfect for you! Matcha Salt it is! It is vegan, oil-free, gluten-free, nut-free, soy-free, super easy to make and it sure is different.
What is Matcha Salt?
Matcha Salt [抹茶塩] is literally a blend of matcha powder and fine sea salt. In some cases, it also has seaweed powder in it. It isn’t a everyday salt but would be a great addition to your recipe. Although this is flavored salt, it’s not really a seasoning. It’s actually a condiment because you don’t really cook with it.
The most common ways to use Matcha salt is serving with tempra. While the sweet & savory soy sauce base dipping sauce is typically the way to eat tempra with, salt is an another way. And the matcha salt is a bit more luxury version of it!
If you are not tempra fan (like us), it’s also great with grilled or roasted veggies or chilled tofu!
The Taste
Most people would associate the flavor of matcha to be something bitter. But matcha (or green tea) also has a hint of umami flavor in it. Now, for the matcha salt, yes, you can certainly taste the bitterness. However since it’s blended with salt, the bitterness becomes milder and the unami flavor gets enhanced. You just need try it to taste!
