This dish is an arrangement of the authentic Japanese dish called “Hourensou no Goma-Ae [ほうれん草の胡麻和え].” It means “Spinach dressed with Sesame.” It’s simple, minimal, and really tasty!
The Sauce
Now, the authentic one is typically prepared with Surigoma [すり胡麻] which is ground sesame. We use our 5-Ingredient Tahini Sauce to dress the spinach.
What Type of Spinach?
The richness of the tahini sauce complements the blanched spinach very well. It’s better to make this dish with mature spinach (not baby spinach) for the texture and flavor. Just make sure to wash well to remove dirt that’s usually trapped between the leaves and stems! No one enjoys biting into sand…
Spinach with Tahini Sauce
Ingredients
- 2 bundles (about 1 pound) spinach use mature one, not baby spinach
- 1/4 cup 5-Ingredient Tahini Sauce
- 1 tsp Basic Toasted Sesame Seeds (optional)
Instructions
- Bring a large pot of water to boil for blanching spinach.
- Meanwhile, prepare an ice bath in a large prep bowl.
- Once water is boiling, blanch spinach for 2 minutes then transfer to the ice-bath to stop the cooking process.
- Remove the spinach from the ice-bath then squeeze gently to extract water. Cut into bite-size (about 1 inch) chunks.
- Serve with tahini sauce and sprinkle toasted sesame seeds for an extra sesame flavor (optional.)
Notes
- It should be served at room temperature.
- We like the style of plating by laying spinach over the sauce but the sauce can be poured over or mixed altogether in a bowl then served.
